History of the Emotions in Worklife Symposia

The Asia-Pacific Symposium on Emotions in Worklife is an initiative of the informal “Emotions Reading Group”, which was established in 2002 by PhD students Michael O’Shea and Marie Dasborough.

Originally, the reading group met monthly to discuss scholarly papers, and came up with the idea of an annual one-day gathering of scholars in the field, where they could present their ideas and network. Out of this grew the first Symposium was held on November 25, 2003 at the UQ Business School with 14 presentations and 7 posters. It attracted some 30 participants, including representatives from interstate.

The second symposium, the ‘2nd Brisbane Symposium on Emotions and Worklife’ was held at the University of Queensland, on 26 November, 2004. In 2004, attendance increased by 50% to 49 people and the symposium generated substantial media interest around the country. In 2005, the 3rd in the series was held at Griffith University, Queensland. This event attracted 41 participants, with 21 presentations.

In 2008 the event was held at Monash University and was renamed the ‘Asia-Pacific Symposium on Emotions in Worklife’ to reflect the growing international status of the event. It is now a must on the annual calender for emotions scholars and management scholars in the Asia-Pacific region.
